Functionality of Door Hardware
Consider the location and purpose of the door in which the door hardware will be installed before making a purchase. Are you putting in a new door for your closet? Is there an entrance at the front of the house? A door to a bathroom? The door’s purpose will dictate the type of hardware that will be used. Determine the “handing” of your door, which is another way of saying look at which direction the door opens. When looking at the door from the outside, you always know which way to open it. There are exceptions to the rule of door handing: Closets, pantries, and other places where the door opens toward you if you are standing outside it. Pre-Drilled or a Blank Door?
If you’re going to buy hardware for a door that doesn’t already have holes drilled, you’ll want to consider whether you’ll be doing the drilling yourself or choosing hardware that comes with pre-drilled holes. Boreholes must be measured if you’re merely replacing the hardware in an existing door. Boreholes can be pre-drilled into new doors, or they can be left blank. If you’re considering purchasing a pre-drilled door, be sure to receive exact measurements from the manufacturer. The backset, in particular, might differ across manufacturers, so don’t assume anything about the borehole measurements.
Obtaining Dimensions: Backset and Borehole Spacing
If you intend to use a door with holes that have already been drilled, the following measurements must be taken:
Backset: The distance from the door edge to the bore hole’s centre is referred to as the “door backset.” There are two common sizes of backset: 2 3/8″ and 2 3/4″.
Borehole Spacing: Door hardware requiring two holes (such as locks and deadbolts) must have both the distance between the holes and the width of each hole measured in order to ensure proper installation. To meet industry requirements, predrilled doors feature two holes with a width of 2 1/8 inches and a distance of 5 1/2 inches between the centres of the holes.
While some internal hardware sets demand larger boreholes, others require a closer centre-to-centre measurement. When looking for door hardware, keep in mind that not all hardware is compatible with the conventional door borehole format, so keep that in mind.
Keying
Keying is the last consideration. Schlage C keyways are used in the majority of door hardware sets, and each set includes two keys. That’s all there is to it! Now that you’ve gathered all of this stuff out of the way, you’re ready to go out and buy some new gear.
