Gympie’s got a few motels that are right on the Bruce Highway or in the town centre. They’re perfect for budget visitors who just need a place to park up for the night. These places usually have standard motel rooms with their own bathroom, free parking, and are close to service stations and fast food places. They’re handy for an overnight stop or as a base for some regional day trips. If you’re planning on staying a bit longer than a night, you’re better off looking for those town centre motels that are a bit further from the highway. They might be a bit quieter. They’re also a bit closer to the local cafes and restaurants, and are usually priced just as well as the ones near the highway. It’s worth paying a bit more for the town centre location if it means you can walk to dinner without having to drive.
Caravan Parks and Cabin Stays
Gympie’s got some great caravan parks that are the cheapest option for solo travellers, couples, and families who don’t need all the bells and whistles of a motel. Powered sites for vans and motorhomes go for $35 to $55 per night. Self-contained cabins with their own kitchen and bathroom start at $80 to $130 per night. That’s a steal compared to what you’d pay at a motel. One of the big advantages of caravan park cabins for budget visitors who are staying for a few nights is that they’ve got a kitchen so you can whip up some meals yourself. For two nights, cooking your own meals and just having one meal out will often save more than if you’d just stayed in a budget motel and eaten out all the time. For families in particular, that makes a big difference.
Short-Term Rentals for Longer Stays
Airbnb and Booking.com have really taken off in Gympie in recent years, and for good reason. When you’re looking at places to stay on these platforms, you’ll likely come across self-contained houses and units that offer something a bit different to the usual motel and caravan park experience. You’ll get a whole lotta space, a kitchen that’s just as good as the one you’ve got at home, a washing machine, and often a nice quiet spot to hang out. Prices for a self-contained house on short-term rental platforms in Gympie are generally between $120 and $200 per night. That’s a bit more than a motel would cost for a couple, but not too steep for families of four.
Booking Strategy: Timing and What to Avoid
Outside of the Muster and school holidays, you don’t need to book your Gympie accommodation too far in advance. Two to four weeks ahead of time will usually be fine for motels and caravan parks. Booking in advance for a stay during the Muster is a whole different story. You really need to get onto it two to three months in advance if you don’t want to end up stuck in some dodgy place in a nearby town. If you leave it till the last minute during school holidays in June/July and Sept/Oct, you’ll probably find that the good spots have gone. You’ll also be paying top dollar for a subpar place.
